Referees are human beings with emotions and contrary to common belief their reaction to situations can be swayed by the environment around them and what they see. If what they see looks bad then it usually is and the unavoidable rush of emotion……
Whatever level you officiate at, I’m pretty sure that you’ve experienced feeling under pressure. How you go on to cope with that pressure often is the difference between making that correct decision on a key match incident and not.
I’ve been fortunate to speak to a large number of referees who have experienced a range of psychological challenges with a common theme – FEAR. Some of the following things were mentioned in our conversations……….
Do you compare yourself to other referees who might be in the promotion system? If the answer is yes – there is a good chance you will get intimidated at times. You may go on to compare yourself to other referees who you think are better than you or other assistants who you rate highly.
Assaults on Referees have been well documented in the media over the past few months. The bodies who support referees are talking about these incidents and local Referees Association branches are informing fellow members of these sad incidents taking place.
